The Perfect Project

SOLDIERS OF THE INTERIOR LIFE

Enter Deliberately Into the Work of Grace

Soldiers of the Interior Life exists to help Catholics pursue the interior life deliberately. You are welcome to join the community, learn more, and remain connected whether or not you are ready to make the full Soldier commitment.

Becoming a Soldier of the Interior Life is a separate and deliberate commitment to pursue perfect love of God through prayer, the sacraments, self-examination, faithful duty, and cooperation with His grace.

A PLACE TO BEGIN

Join the STIL Community

You do not need to be ready to make the Soldier commitment in order to join the community. Joining is simply a way to learn more and remain connected to others pursuing the interior life.

It does not mean that you are claiming to have reached holiness, that you have made the full Soldier commitment, or that you are already able to fulfill every practice.

Joining the community and making the Soldier commitment are not the same action.

THE BATTLEFIELD IS THE HEART

The Enemy Is Not Other People

A Soldier of the Interior Life is not at war with other people. The battlefield is the heart. The enemies are sin, pride, self-rule, distraction, fear, comfort, resentment, vanity, and every attachment that competes with God.

The fight is often quiet and hidden: getting out of bed to pray, refusing an uncharitable thought, returning to Confession, accepting an inconvenience, guarding the eyes, using time well, or obeying God when no one else would know the difference.

“Repeated choices become habits. Habits shape character. Character prepares us either to receive God more fully or to resist Him.”

THE GOAL

Perfect Love of God

This is not merely a program of self-improvement. It concerns the purpose of life and our eternal destiny. Every Catholic is called not simply to be decent, informed, or outwardly religious, but to become holy—to reach the fullness of the Catholic life and the perfection of charity.

The goal is God Himself: to know Him, love Him, serve Him, and finally live in complete union with Him in heaven.

“All Christians in any state or walk of life are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity.”

Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2013

God supplies the grace; we do not perfect ourselves. Yet grace does not make our response unimportant. God asks for our free cooperation. Sanctity begins when we stop asking how little is necessary and begin asking how completely we can belong to Him.

FIVE CONCRETE STEPS

How to Become a Soldier of the Interior Life

The full Soldier commitment is for those prepared to establish a definite rule of prayer and sacramental life. It should be made deliberately rather than from pressure, enthusiasm, or a desire merely to belong to a group.

1

Pray for the Desire of Perfect Love

Begin with this prayer:

“God, I want to die perfectly pleasing to You. I desire perfection not only because I fear hell and the rigor of purgatory, but most of all because I desire perfect love for You, whom I should love above all created things, above my own self-love, and above my own self-will.”

2

Depend Entirely on God's Grace

Know that you cannot make yourself perfect. Only God can accomplish this work within you. Seek how He desires to purify and form you, and cooperate faithfully with what He asks.

3

Establish a Daily Rule of Prayer and Sacramental Life

Commit to the Rosary every day and thirty minutes of mental prayer each day. Beyond Sunday Mass, attend daily Mass as often as the duties of your state in life practically allow.

4

Go to Confession Regularly

Go to Confession at least once each month. Return sooner after grave sin. Regular Confession keeps repentance concrete and allows grace to heal faults before they harden into habits.

5

Study the Path and Examine Your Progress

Study the path to perfection and examine whether charity, obedience, prayer, freedom from sin, and faithfulness to duty are growing. As you advance, pray for and seek out a faithful spiritual director.

The commitment does not mechanically produce holiness. A Rosary can be rushed, mental prayer can be distracted, Mass can be attended without interior participation, and Confession can become routine. The rule establishes the ordinary conditions in which grace can steadily work.

WITHIN YOUR STATE IN LIFE

The Rule Must Remain Subordinate to Charity

The rule must remain subordinate to charity and the duties of one's state in life. A parent does not neglect a child in order to protect a private devotion. A worker does not steal an employer's time. A sick person may need to adapt the form of prayer.

“Fidelity is not rigidity. The purpose of the rule is to make the whole life available to God.”

Beyond Sunday Mass, daily Mass is pursued as often as the duties of one's state in life practically allow. On unusually difficult days, prayer may need to be prudently adapted, divided, or moved rather than casually abandoned.

AN HONEST BEGINNING

Candidate Soldier of the Interior Life

For someone who sincerely desires the full commitment but cannot yet sustain it, becoming a Candidate Soldier provides an honest and deliberate place to begin.

If you cannot yet make the full commitment, pledge yourself as a Candidate Soldier of the Interior Life. Commit now to as much of this rule as you can honestly sustain, with the deliberate intention of growing over time into the full commitment.

“Candidacy is an honest beginning ordered toward complete love of God, not a permanent lower standard or an excuse for delay.”

A Candidate Soldier is training toward the full rule. If thirty minutes of mental prayer is not yet stable, begin with a definite period and grow toward it. If the Rosary is irregular, anchor it to a daily event. If Confession is rare, establish a regular schedule.

ORDINARY CONDITIONS FOR GRACE

Why These Commitments Matter

The Daily Rosary

Places the life of Christ before the mind and entrusts the Soldier to His Mother.

Mental Prayer

Trains the soul to remain before God long enough for truth to enter the will.

The Mass

Unites the Soldier to Christ's sacrifice and feeds the soul with the Eucharist.

Regular Confession

Prevents tolerated faults from settling into permanent occupation and keeps repentance concrete.

Study and Spiritual Direction

Study forms judgment. A faithful spiritual director provides objective guidance through self-deception, dryness, and more advanced movements of prayer.

ABOUT STIL

Soldiers of the Interior Life

Soldiers of the Interior Life exists to help Catholics pursue the interior life deliberately. It brings together the path, principles, practices, prayer, self-examination, and wisdom of the Catholic spiritual tradition so that we can stop drifting and begin moving deliberately toward God.

The Perfect Project is a practical introduction to this mission. It helps Catholics understand the call to perfection, recognize the work of grace, identify what may obstruct it, deepen prayer, and take the next faithful step toward complete union with God.

BEGIN NOW

Give God the Next Faithful Yes

You do not need to claim that you are holy before beginning. You need the humility to admit that God is calling you higher, the confidence to depend upon His grace, and the willingness to cooperate with what He asks.
