Fear of the Lord
The beginning of wisdom. Receive reality as gift. Let reverence become the foundation of everything that follows.
The Pipeline of Grace
Explore the spiritual traditions that illuminate each stage of the soul’s journey toward union with God.
Saint Thomas Aquinas
"Now there are five effects of grace in us: of these, the first is, to heal the soul; the second, to desire good; the third, to carry into effect the good proposed; the fourth, to persevere in good; the fifth, to reach glory."
Summa Theologiae, I-II, q. 111, a. 3
The pipeline begins with fear of the Lord and proceeds through repentance, belief, obedience, prayer, abandonment, and finally transforming union—the perfection of charity in which the soul loves God completely.
The beginning of wisdom. Receive reality as gift. Let reverence become the foundation of everything that follows.
Turn again toward God with an honest heart. Acknowledge what has separated you from Him and desire to be made new.
Entrust your whole life to Jesus Christ—not merely the parts you can control, but everything.
Learn His voice. Let love take concrete shape in daily faithfulness to His commandments and His will.
Remain with God long enough for the heart to become quiet, receptive, and true. Move from words to silence, from petition to presence.
Abandon every self-protective claim. Surrender your plans, your fears, and your future to the mercy and power of God.
Love God with an undivided heart. As His grace makes perfect charity present within you, the perfection of Christ becomes increasingly your own.
Saint Teresa of Ávila
Teresa maps the soul's journey through seven mansions—from the outer courts of conversion to the innermost chamber of spiritual marriage.
Outside the Castle
The person lives apart from friendship with God through mortal sin and remains dominated by worldly attachments.
First Mansions: Entering Grace
The soul enters the castle through conversion and prayer but remains heavily distracted by temptations and worldly concerns.
Second Mansions: Spiritual Struggle
The soul begins praying regularly and hearing God's call while actively battling old habits and temptation.
Third Mansions: Virtuous Discipline
The soul avoids serious sin and practices virtue but risks complacency, self-reliance, and excessive control.
Fourth Mansions: Infused Prayer
God begins acting more directly, granting supernatural recollection, interior quiet, and a growing capacity to receive divine love.
Fifth Mansions: Prayer of Union
The soul becomes deeply absorbed in God and undergoes a profound transformation symbolized by the silkworm becoming a butterfly.
Sixth Mansions: Spiritual Betrothal
The soul experiences intense longing for God, profound purification, severe trials, and extraordinary mystical graces.
Seventh Mansions: Spiritual Marriage
The soul enters a stable transforming union with God, expressed through humility, interior peace, and selfless service.
Death in the State of Grace
The earthly journey ends with the soul united to God, although any remaining effects or attachments of sin may still require purification.
Purgatory, If Necessary
God completes the soul's purification, removing everything that prevents the perfect love and vision of Heaven.
Heaven: The Beatific Vision
The soul sees God face to face and enjoys complete, eternal communion with the Holy Trinity.
Dom Jean-Baptiste Chautard
Chautard provides spiritual directors with a framework for assessing the spiritual progress of those entrusted to their care—nine levels from hardened sin to complete sanctity.
01
Hardened in Sin
Persistently chooses mortal sin and deliberately refuses to turn to God.
02
Surface Christianity
Treats mortal sin lightly and practices prayer and confession mechanically.
03
Mediocre Piety
Regrets mortal sin but accepts venial sin and makes little effort to overcome it.
04
Intermittent Piety
Resists mortal sin sincerely but struggles inconsistently against venial sin and in prayer.
05
Sustained Piety
Avoids mortal sin, vigilantly fights venial sin, and remains faithful to prayer.
06
Fervor
Avoids deliberate venial sin, actively combats imperfections, and advances through deeper prayer.
07
Relative Perfection
Lives habitually in prayer, self-denial, detachment, and loving union with God.
08
Heroic Perfection
Reaches profound self-forgetfulness, contemplation, and a willing preference for suffering over personal joys.
09
Complete Sanctity
Lives in transforming union with God, with imperfections scarcely apparent and love purifying the soul.
The nine levels of prayer
The tradition maps the soul's deepening receptivity to God's transforming work—from the first words of petition to the silence of perfect love.
Vocal Prayer
Praying attentively with spoken or internal words, such as the Our Father or Hail Mary.
Meditation
Using the intellect and imagination to reflect on spiritual truths and apply them to one's life.
Affective Prayer
Reasoning gives way to deeper movements of love and the will toward God.
Prayer of Simplicity
Resting in a simple, peaceful, and loving attention toward God.
Infused Contemplation
Receiving an experiential knowledge of God that the soul cannot produce itself.
Prayer of Quiet
The will is captivated by God's presence and filled with profound interior peace.
Simple Union
The soul's interior faculties become completely absorbed in God and divine love.
Conforming Union
The soul is deeply united to God's will, sometimes experiencing ecstasy and intense spiritual trials.
Transforming Union
The soul enters the highest earthly union with God, known as spiritual marriage.
The consistent teaching of the saints and theologians is that every Christian is called to pursue holiness and perfection. The Pipeline of Grace brings these complementary spiritual traditions together to illustrate the soul's journey toward perfect union with God.
