The Perfect Project

RESOURCES

Wisdom for the Interior Life

No short guide can replace Sacred Scripture, the teaching of the Catholic Church, or the great spiritual teachers. These resources provide the depth behind The Perfect Project: the primacy of the interior life, the development of prayer, confidence in God's mercy, fidelity in ordinary duties, self-examination, and the universal call to sanctity.

WHERE TO BEGIN

Explore by Purpose

Recommended Reading

Explore the Catholic spiritual classics that provide much of the foundation behind The Perfect Project and Soldiers of the Interior Life.

Prayer Resources

Explore the Chaplet of Perfection, mental prayer, growth in prayer, and prayers for surrender and greater union with God.

THE FIRST PRIORITY

Begin With the Gospels

Sacred Scripture must become a steady part of the interior life. The Gospels deserve first priority because through them the disciple repeatedly encounters the words, actions, character, mercy, demands, suffering, death, and Resurrection of Jesus.

The rest of Scripture gives the world in which those mysteries become intelligible. Read within the living Tradition and teaching authority of the Catholic Church, the Bible does more than provide information. It judges our assumptions, gives language to prayer, and teaches us to recognize the patterns of Providence.

Catechism of the Catholic Church, 101–141

“The soul studies because love wants to know the Beloved.”

Begin mental prayer with the Gospels. Read slowly, remain with the words and actions of Christ, bring what you encounter into prayer, and ask what response He requires.

THE SPIRITUAL CLASSICS

Go Deeper With the Great Teachers

The recommended books provide much of the spiritual foundation behind The Perfect Project. They address the primacy of the interior life, mental prayer, recollection, spiritual childhood, confidence in mercy, virtue, fidelity within one's state in life, and the soul's progress toward union with God.

THE CATHOLIC SPIRITUAL TRADITION

Primary Spiritual Teachers

Dom Jean-Baptiste Chautard

The primacy of the interior life, the relationship between prayer and fruitful action, and the examination of spiritual progress.

St. Teresa of Ávila

Mental prayer, recollection, perseverance, the Interior Castle, infused prayer, and transforming union.

St. John of the Cross

Purification, detachment, divine love, and the soul's transformation through increasingly complete union with God.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Spiritual childhood, confidence in mercy, dependence upon grace, and faithfulness in small and ordinary acts of love.

St. Francis de Sales

The universal call to holiness, fidelity within one's state in life, prayer, virtue, and practical Catholic devotion.

St. Alphonsus Liguori

The necessity of prayer, confidence in grace, perseverance, meditation, and complete love of God.

These teachers do not present identical systems or use identical terminology. Each contributes a distinct perspective to the Catholic tradition of the interior life.

FROM KNOWLEDGE TO CONVERSION

Read for Formation, Not Accumulation

Keep Scripture First

Give the Gospels regular priority and read other spiritual works in harmony with Sacred Scripture and Catholic teaching.

Read Slowly

A few pages received attentively may be more fruitful than completing a book without allowing it to affect the will.

Bring Reading Into Prayer

Ask what the reading reveals about God, what it exposes within you, and what response of love or obedience it requires.

Choose One Application

Allow study to reshape one concrete judgment, habit, duty, prayer, or act of charity.

“Knowledge without charity can inflate pride. The truth must descend from the page into judgment, desire, speech, habit, and love.”

LEARN TO PRAY

Allow Reading to Lead Back to God

Prayer is the most important practical work of the interior life because every other reform depends upon living contact with God. The project's prayer resources introduce mental prayer, the daily Rosary, the Chaplet of Perfection, growth in prayer, surrender, and dependence upon grace.
